An unloaded gun was found in a student’s backpack at Middletown High School on Wednesday morning, the Middletown Police Department said.
Officers were called to the school around 10 a.m. after they received a report that a student may have been in possession of a weapon on school grounds. A shelter-in-place was initiated while police investigated the incident, according to police.
When officers searched the school, they found an unloaded gun in a student’s backpack. Authorities “took swift action to secure the weapon and safely resolve the situation,” police said.
The student was also removed from the school, Middletown Public Schools Interim Superintendent Alan Addley said.
Police said there were no threats made against students or staff, and the shelter-in-place has since been lifted. Students are back to their normal schedule, according to Addley.
Middletown police officers will stay on campus as a precaution and to support the school, according to police.
“The Middletown Police Department continues to work closely with school district officials as the investigation remains ongoing,” police said. “At this time, there is no need for parents or guardians to report to the school.”
