Lemon is having a moment.
Once the kind of name reserved for fiction or a cute nickname — think Lemon Breeland, the sharp-tongued socialite on “Hart of Dixie,” played by Jamie King, or the pet name for Sophie, daughter of the late Luke Perry — it has now burst into the spotlight. A 2024 TikTok from Mississippi mom Daisy Jane Wood, featuring her newborn daughter, Lemon, helped introduce the name to millions.
The reaction was immediate and divided: charming or too cute? Fresh or a little too tart?
“So many people don’t realize babies grow into adults,” one person wrote in the comments.
- “I have a Clementine!! Love Lemon!”
- “Listen here. Lemon is low key so cute.”
- “My granddaughter’s name is Lemon Belle she just turned two.”
- “It’s going to make life hard for her in a professional setting someday.”
For Wood, the name isn’t just unique; it feels true to her daughter. In an interview with TODAY, she described Lemon as “bright and outgoing,” adding: “She’s very zesty, very vibrant, very lemon-y, if that makes sense!”
She also pointed out that lemons have become a popular motif in home decor and children’s fashion, symbolizing brightness and joy.
“It’s such a positive, happy vibe,” she said. “And that’s exactly Lemon.”
Clementine is the most popular fruit name on the Social Security rankings, at No. 477 in 2024, up from No. 543 the year before. Peach, by contrast, has only flirted with the list, most recently in the 2010s, when it hovered in the 900s before falling off again. And even after Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin chose Apple for their daughter in 2004, the name never gained enough traction to crack the Top 1,000.
“Aside from botanical names like Juniper (berries) or Olive, food and drink names aren’t really a trend,” Laura Wattenberg, creator of Namerology, previously told TODAY.com. “If you are a fruit name like ‘Peaches’ or ‘Cherry,’ it’s more about cuteness than edibility. There is, however, a growing trend toward ultra-cute names for girls.”
