Propane truck enters Candlewood Lake in New Fairfield: DEEP
A truck carrying about 2,000 gallons of propane ended up in Candlewood Lake in New Fairfield on Thursday morning, officials said.
At around 9:39 a.m., the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) said it received a call regarding an incident involving a propane delivery truck that entered Candlewood Lake at a private residence.
It happened in the area of Squantz Pond Boat Launch, DEEP said.
The driver was connecting the truck to fill the home’s propane system when it rolled over a retaining wall and into the lake. It damaged the propane service connected to the home and caused a leak, which has stopped, according to DEEP.
The truck is not currently leaking propane or motor fuel, and there are no impacts to the environment. No injuries were reported, and there is no exposure risk to the public, including volunteers in the area, DEEP said.
DEEP is working with propane companies to develop a safe plan to remove the truck.
The retaining wall will need to be excavated, and a stone ramp will need to be constructed because the truck is more than 100 feet from the roadway, and a crane can’t get close enough to it, according to DEEP.
Connecticut Emergency Management said there were initial reports of two separate incidents in New Fairfield: a propane leak at a residence and a propane truck in Candlewood Lake.
Connecticut State Police and regional hazardous materials crews are also responding to the scene.
