Police report reveals former Hartford treasurer may have shredded documents at office after resignation
A Hartford Police incident report obtained by NBC Connecticut Investigates reveals former Hartford treasurer Carmen Sierra went back to her office after she resigned and may have been shredding documents.
NBC Connecticut Investigates authenticated the report through law enforcement sources.
The report says on July 8, the Police Chief’s Office received information that Sierra was in her office shredding documents. Several officers, along with Chief Rovella responded. Members of the Mayor’s office were also there to “safeguard the city’s equipment and documents.”
Sierra was briefly interviewed by the Mayor’s personnel in the presence of Chief Rovella who was wearing a body worn camera. After the interview, she left the building.
A Hartford police detective observed the office environment and saw a gray shred bin that had been placed right next to Sierra’s former office door. The bin was locked and there was a small amount of paper seen in the bin, according to the incident report.
The report goes on to say there is a small room located near Sierra’s former office that was referred to as the “safe room” where there is a large safe inside it. In there, there is a commercial grade shredding device that officers found.
The shredding device is a top fed unit capable of processing multiple pieces of paper at one time, according to the report. A detective opened the shred bin and saw it was filled with shreds of paper.
The report says it is unknown is this shredded paper was recently deposited there or has been there for some time.
Sierra’s attorney has denied that Sierra had a shredder in her office.
