Multiple downed wires in Naugatuck on Tuesday morning caused power outages across town, prompting an early dismissal at a school and the evacuation of the town’s animal control facility, police said.
As of 12 p.m., about 266 Naugatuck Eversource customers were still without power, according to the utility’s outage map.
Police said a power line that came down on Cherry Street energized a chain link fence, sparking several small spot fires and smoke around the Naugatuck Animal Control building, which was evacuated.
“All animals have been safely relocated and are being temporarily housed at a neighboring animal control facility,” police wrote in a Facebook post.
Eversource has started restoring power to some areas of High Street, but Cross Street and New Haven Road are still without power, police said.
Cross Street Intermediate School was dismissed early due to the outage, according to police.
Mutual aid departments from Beacon Hose, Middlebury, Prospect, and Bethany provided station coverage and assisted with calls related to the power outages, according to firefighters.
Police said they would continue providing updates as emergency crews and utility personnel address the situation and Eversource works to restore power.
