Lamont, other city officials discuss recent ICE activity at news conference
Gov. Ned Lamont and other state and local officials will hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon in response to increased U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the state.
The conference comes after reports of ICE activity and arrests in Danbury and other Connecticut communities in recent days.
Connecticut Students for a Dream said Tuesday that its network received firsthand reports from eyewitnesses indicating that at least 21 people were detained, including 16 in Danbury, four in Stamford, and one in Bridgeport.
NBC Connecticut has reached out to ICE to confirm those figures but has not yet received a response.
Lamont will be joined at the 4 p.m. news conference by U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves, Danbury Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour, and representatives from Danbury Unites for Immigrants.
According to the governor’s office, officials will announce actions being taken to support immigrant families.
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal also issued a statement Wednesday about the activity.
“ICE’s cruelty and craven brutality has no limit,” Blumenthal said. “Snatching people off the streets as they walk their children to school or wait for a ride to work — such tactics are abusive, abhorrent, and illegal. I am in touch with state and local authorities and am ready to assist in any way possible.”
