Bus drivers plan strike ahead of first day of school in Plainfield

Bus drivers plan strike ahead of first day of school in Plainfield

Families in Plainfield are facing uncertainty as students return to school Thursday, with school bus drivers planning to strike just hours before the first day of classes.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there was no update from negotiations between the drivers’ union and DATTCO, the company that provides bus service for the district. Unless an agreement is reached, drivers are expected to begin striking at 5 a.m. Thursday.

The potential walkout has parents and caregivers preparing alternative transportation plans for students.

“It’s the best time of the year. Except in this situation,” said Jennifer Beaudoin, a Plainfield grandparent.

The union representing the drivers says contract talks have stalled over wages, health care and retirement plans. Union officials say workers have gone two years without a raise.

“People are just trying to make a living. I’m so grateful that everyone was being transparent about it. And I think that’s the thing that most families need so that they can plan,” Beaudoin said.

The union said the possible strike follows nine months of negotiations.

“My message to the parents:  these men and women that transport their students are professionals, and they should be treated fairly by the company,” said Craig Mitchell of Teamsters Local 493.

DATTCO said it has already made concessions during negotiations, including significant wage increases, health care benefits, retirement plans, paid holidays and longevity bonuses.

“We value our dedicated employees who provide safe transportation each day in Plainfield and believe that our proposals are incredibly competitive and fair,” the company said in a statement.

Despite the possibility of a strike, Plainfield schools are expected to remain open Thursday.

The superintendent said the district is exploring alternative transportation options, but families should prepare to bring students to and from school if bus service is unavailable.

“Drive them to school in the morning, pick them up in the afternoon, and of course, we have family help and thankfully retired people who can pick them up while other people are at work,” Beaudoin said.

If a strike occurs, the district said schools could implement extended drop-off and pickup times to help families adjust.

The superintendent is expected to provide an update on the potential strike at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
