Four suspects are in custody, and a shelter-in-place has been lifted after an armed robbery and possible home invasion in Fairfield, police said.
The Fairfield Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery and possible home invasion on Candlewood Road at 2:30 a.m. Thursday, and arrested one suspect upon arrival. Hours later, they arrested another in Hamden, Detective Jason Takacs said.
Two additional suspects were at large for hours, but are now in custody, according to Takacs.
McKinley Elementary School, Warde High School, and Fairfield’s Early Childhood Center were closed Thursday “out of an abundance of caution,” each school said on its website. There is still a large police presence in the Candlewood Road and Black Rock Turnpike area.

Takacs said that early in the investigation, police believed the two suspects who were at large were still in the home, but that was not the case.
There was at least one firearm involved, and the suspects were wearing masks, dark clothing, and hooded sweatshirts, Takacs said.
Fairfield Police, the SWAT team, the Detective Division, and the active investigation unit are still on the scene. Police were also using drones to search the area, Takacs said.
There were people in the home at the time of the invasion who are now safe and have been cleared by the SWAT team.

“There are no threats to any schools in Fairfield, however, understanding the concerns of parents, we have increased police presence at other schools in the area,” police said in a Facebook post.
No injuries were reported, and no details were released about the suspects taken into custody, Takacs said.
“Expect to see law enforcement in this area in many different forms,” Takacs said. “In the forms of cars and lights and sirens and officers on foot.”
