
A hormonal and metabolic condition long known as PCOS has a new name, and doctors say GLP-1 medications could offer another treatment option for some women living with the condition.
PMOS stands for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome and affects about one in eight women.
Symptoms can include irregular periods, polycystic ovaries, and high levels of androgens, which can lead to extra hair growth.
Insulin resistance can also play a role in the condition. That means the body does not respond to insulin as well as it should, which can lead to higher blood sugar.
Dr. Jason Schneider with UConn Health said GLP-1 medications can help address insulin resistance, which could in turn help with other symptoms of PMOS.
“That improvement in insulin resistance will help to lower circulating androgens that are increased in PMOS, and thus then restoring ovulation,” Schneider said.
He said lowering androgen levels could also help with unwanted hair growth. Schneider said GLP-1 medications can help some patients lose weight and meet their metabolic and endocrine goals.
For some families, the difference has already been noticeable.
Oscar Mendoza, of Hackensack, New Jersey, told NBC Connecticut his sister has PMOS and struggled to lose weight despite following a strict diet.
“She was in and out of the doctors because she had a lot of stomach issues on top of everything, which is one of the main reasons they put her on the weight loss,” Mendoza said. “She is on a strict diet and no matter what she would eat, the weight would not go away.”
Mendoza said his sister eventually tried a GLP-1 medication and began seeing results. He said he has never seen her look happier or healthier.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved GLP-1 medications specifically to treat PMOS. Doctors say patients taking the medications should stay in contact with their health care provider and follow their recommended treatment plan.
