New details are being revealed about a former Avon daycare worker accused of sexually assaulting multiple children at BrightPath Avon Early Learning and Child Care Center after he was arraigned in Torrington on Wednesday.
Jan Carlos Berrios-Otero, 29, was first arrested April 1 after an administrator at the BrightPath Avon Early Learning and Child Care Center contacted police about possible inappropriate contact involving a child.
Newly obtained arrest warrants detail a significantly expanded investigation.
Berrios-Otero is now facing multiple additional charges of fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor related to those incidents. He is also charged with aggravated sexual assault of a minor due to the number of victims under the age of 13.
On April 22, amid the investigation, the Avon daycare center announced it would close its facility, with its final day being May 22.
Investigators reviewed surveillance video from the daycare center from March 2 to April 1. Berrios-Otero was working on 22 of those days, the warrants stated.
According to the warrants, police identified six incidents involving five children, described in the documents as boys between the ages of about 3 and 5, at the BrightPath facility on Simsbury Road.
All of the incidents happened during “nap time,” the warrants stated.
Investigators said the surveillance video showed Berrios-Otero lying next to children during nap time, touching them inappropriately, and using a blanket to conceal his actions, according to the warrants.
Berrios-Otero is being held on a total of $3 million bond — two warrants show $1 million bonds and two show $500,000 bonds.
His next court date is June 23.
