Volunteers plant pollinator garden for beautification project in East Hartford
More than 25 volunteers spent Sunday morning planting flowers and improving a park in East Hartford as part of an effort to support pollinators and beautify the community.
The International WeLoveU Foundation hosted its Pollinator Beautification Day at Emma and Nicholas DePietro Park.
“We’re in our phase one beautification day,” volunteer Leila Hurst said.
Volunteers like Leila planted flowers, spread fresh mulch and removed weeds throughout the park to create a healthier habitat for bees, butterflies and birds.
Hurst said the work is about more than making the park look nice.
“[Pollinators] come to areas such as these, like gardens, and they pollinate, and they help our ecosystem,” Hurst said. “They help us as a community with different foods that we eat. Every one bite of food that we take is because of the pollinators.”
“Also, the pollinators are helping the plants thrive,” she added.
Organizers said the event is part of the foundation’s broader effort to educate communities about the importance of pollinators and the role they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
The International WeLoveU Foundation says it will host a free “Pollinator Expo & Community Fair” on Sunday, July 26, to celebrate one year of Mom’s Garden, one of two sites in the park the foundation built and maintains. It also serves to further educate the community about pollinators and their importance.
