Two retired Lawrence + Memorial Hospital employees remembered after fatal New London house fire

We’re learning more about the two people who died in a house fire in New London Monday. The two who died were a married couple, Dr. Daniel Moalli and Glenna Moalli.

Both were longtime employees of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Many from the hospital family told NBC Connecticut they are grieving these tremendous losses.

Laura Tompkins, a former hospital employee, worked alongside the Moallis for years.

“Dr. Moalli was one of the most brilliant doctors that I’ve ever had the privilege of both working with and having as my personal physician, my neurologist,” said Tompkins.

Dr. Moalli was a beloved retired physician who started practicing in 1966. He’s described as a pioneer in the neurology department at L&M, bringing new technology and programs, including the development of the stroke center.

Tompkins says Dr. Moalli was always there to help.

“I really did consider him more than a doctor, he was one of our family members. This is a really tough day for many of us,” Tompkins said.

The hospital tells NBC Connecticut Glenna Moalli worked in the infectious diseases department, and Tompkins says she was well respected by her colleagues.

“His wife was a wonderful woman, and this is just a really hard day,” Tompkins said.

“On behalf of our hospital family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to their family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with them. We are grateful for their lasting contributions and honor their legacy with gratitude and respect,” said a spokesperson for L+M Hospital.

Neighbors say the couple, who were 90 and 77 years old, lived life to the fullest and were known for their kindness and their love of growing flowers.

“They loved to party still. We had a party the 4th of July. They were here. They enjoyed themselves,” said Diane Howelo, a neighbor. “They’re lovely, lovely people. They were really nice neighbors.”

The couple also lived with two live-in caretakers. They both survived the fire.

The fire is under investigation, but police said at this time there is nothing suspicious in nature.
