Two people were arrested on Tuesday afternoon following a multi-town police pursuit that began in Shelton and ended on the I-95 South Exit 19 ramp in Southport after multiple crashes, according to state police.

Connecticut State Police were dispatched around 12:15 p.m. after reports that Shelton police officers were in pursuit of a white Nissan Altima, which was allegedly using improper registration plates and had struck multiple Milford police cruisers earlier that morning, according to state police.

Shelton police started the chase near the Huntington Turnpike and Trap Falls Road. Shelton police told state police that while they were chasing the Nissan, it was involved in a hit-and-run.

State police joined the chase near Nichols Avenue and Penny Avenue in Stratford. They watched the driver run multiple red lights, illegally pass vehicles, get into multiple collisions, and, at one point, cross onto the playground area of Second Hill Lane Elementary School while attempting to evade police.

The Nissan continued to flee through Stratford and into Bridgeport, until it became disabled on the I-95 South Exit 19 ramp in Southport. The driver tried to run away on foot, but was arrested shortly after, state police said.

The driver, later identified as a 32-year-old man from Bridgeport, was also found in possession of drugs, according to state police.

He was charged with reckless endangerment in the second degree, risk of injury to a minor, reckless driving, interfering with an officer, improper use of maker plates, possession of drug paraphernalia, disobeying signal of an officer, and failure to maintain proper lane.

He was unable to post his $10,000 bond and was transported to Bridgeport Correctional Center. He appeared in Bridgeport Superior Court on Wednesday morning.

A 32-year-old woman from Milford was inside the Nissan with the doors locked when the chase ended. Police said she ignored all commands to exit the car was later observed using what police described as drug paraphernalia inside the car.

She was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

The woman was unable to post her $5,000 bond and was transferred to York Correctional Center. She also appeared in Bridgeport Superior Court on Wednesday morning.
