The HOV lane remains closed near the Hartford Turnpike Entry on I-84 West in Manchester after a tractor-trailer struck a car and hit a bridge overpass overnight Wednesday, firefighters said.
At about 1:30 a.m., the tractor-trailer hit the car in the HOV lane and broke through the barrier of the overpass, which was about 50 feet above the ground, the Manchester Fire Department said in a Facebook post.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection went to the scene to assess a “significant oil spill,” firefighters said.
The Department of Transportation was repairing the road and bridge around 10 a.m., according to CTroads.org. Both vehicles have been removed from the scene, firefighters said.
Both vehicles were significantly damaged, and one person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A second person refused medical treatment, firefighters said in the post.
“Luckily there was no fall from the overpass and no extrication was required,” firefighters wrote in the post.
