The cleanup continues tonight in Groton after the blizzard dumped about 20 inches of snow in the area, and tenants at one apartment complex say they couldn’t even get out Tuesday morning.
“We had a real hard time getting out of front doors because the snow was built up against it,” Sue, a tenant at Pequot Village, said.
Weathering a blizzard wasn’t easy for tenants there, and neither was the cleanup for it. They’re frustrated over why it took so long, saying it made it harder for many of them, who are either elderly or have disabilities, to get around.
“There are people in wheelchairs, and they just cleared those areas. I mean, come on, what if they have to go somewhere or be picked up by the ambulance or something?” Anita, another tenant, said.
“The lady over here is 96 years old. She couldn’t get out of her house,” Sue said.
One tenant showed us what the walkways at the apartment complex looked like on Tuesday morning, much of it buried under about 2 feet of snow.
Pequot Village did get plowed, allowing people to walk, but residents say this happened about 24 hours after the snow fell.
“That’s unacceptable, especially here in this environment,” Jeffrey Appicelli, a tenant, said.
The complex is owned by the Groton Housing Authority, which hired Imagineers LLC to manage the property. The company told NBC Connecticut the area saw an unprecedented amount of snow and that it isn’t unusual to take multiple days to clean up, since they need to move vehicles and find space for the snow. They say their contractor was able to clear all walkways and are in touch with tenants on clearing out the parking lots.
But with more snow on the way, some tenants are worried the cleanup could take even longer.
“Now we have another storm coming or two. I’m leery about that as well,” Appicelli said.
