Teen arrested in 2024 New Haven murder where man was killed in broad daylight
New Haven police have made an arrest in connection with the 2024 killing of 25-year-old Christopher Santana.
Mayor Justin Elicker and police chief David Zannelli are expected to provide an update on the investigation during a news conference at New Haven Police Department headquarters at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Members of Santana’s family are also expected to attend.
Police said 17-year-old Thaddeus Lowery, of New Haven, was taken into custody on Aug. 12 and has been charged with murder, felony murder, and carrying a pistol without a permit.
Lowery, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, is being held on a $2 million bond, and his case has been transferred to adult court, according to police.
Santana was shot around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 2, 2024, after driving a friend to the rear parking lot of 730 George Street, according to investigators. Police said two masked people approached Santana’s car, and one of them shot him before both ran from the area.
Santana was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later died.
According to an arrest warrant, investigators said Santana had gone to the parking lot to sell marijuana after communicating with an Instagram account about the sale. Lowery was identified as the person a witness saw shoot into Santana’s vehicle, according to the warrant.
Police ultimately said they developed probable cause to charge Lowery with murder, felony murder, and carrying a pistol without a permit.
