Sen. Ryan Fazio wins Republican endorsement in race for governor, McCaughey concedes

Sen. Ryan Fazio wins Republican endorsement in race for governor, McCaughey concedes

Sen. Ryan Fazio unanimously won the Republican endorsement in the race for governor Saturday, a victory made possible by Erin Stewart’s abrupt departure.

Fellow Republican Betsy McCaughey conceded during the first round of voting after only securing 8% of the delegates, and Timothy Wilcox was never nominated.

Once Fazio, (R-Greenwich), was the only nominated candidate, delegates unanimously supported him with a voice vote.

“Now is the time for us to come together and focus on what matters the most,” Fazio told the convention.

McCaughey also urged the party to unite around Fazio’s candidacy as the party looks to unseat Gov. Ned Lamont, (D-Connecticut).

Stewart, the former mayor of New Britain, was long seen as the party’s frontrunner but she suspended her campaign Thursday amid an ongoing investigation into her use of a city credit card.

A report, released Thursday by a lawfirm hired by the city, claimed evidence Stewart repeatedly used her credit card while mayor to make personal purchases.

The party had not endorsed a candidate for lieutenant governor.
