See where UConn women landed in latest NCAA Tournament Top 16 reveal

With Selection Sunday just two weeks away, the UConn women’s basketball team remains poised to earn its first No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament since 2018.

The selection committee revealed its top 16 teams for the second time on Sunday and once again gave the reigning national champions the top spot in the rankings. The Huskies (30-0) are the only undefeated team in Division I this season and will likely to enter the tournament without a loss amid a 66-game winning streak in the Big East.

The last time UConn was No. 1 overall, it was also undefeated entering the tournament, but it came up short suffering a buzzer-beater loss to Notre Dame in the Final Four.

As the top overall seed, the Huskies would fall in the Fort Worth 1 region. Behind UConn, UCLA claimed the second 1-seed followed by South Carolina and Texas. The Longhorns were No. 5 in the first reveal but jumped Vanderbilt to rejoin the top line after the Commodores lost to Georgia.

In the Huskies’ region, LSU is projected as the 2-seed, ranked No. 7 by the committee, setting up a potential Elite Eight meeting. UConn and LSU haven’t played since 2016, but the Huskies have more recent tournament history with Tigers coach Kim Mulkey. UConn eliminated Mulkey’s Baylor squad from the tournament in 2021, her final season leading the program before leaving for LSU.

UConn could also get a regular-season rematch with 3-seed Louisville, ranked No. 9 by the committee, in the Elite Eight. The Huskies beat the Cardinals 79-66 in their season opener on Nov. 3 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The last time the programs met in the postseason was in the 2019 Elite Eight, and UConn won 80-72.

The latest ranking projects No. 13 Maryland as the 4-seed in Fort Worth 1 for a potential Sweet 16 matchup with the Huskies. UConn hasn’t faced Maryland in an NCAA Tournament since 2015, when it knocked off the Terrapins in the Final Four en route to a third consecutive national title.

UConn tips off the postseason next Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament after concluding the regular season Sunday night against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.
