Scrap metal catches fire at Hartford Metal Solutions, chief says
A scrap metal fire at a Hartford business is now under control after firefighters responded Friday morning, according to the Hartford Fire Department.
Firefighters were called to Hartford Metal Solutions at 295 Huyshope Ave. around 9:10 a.m. after receiving a report of a scrap metal fire, Hartford Fire Department District Chief Mario Oquendo Jr. said.
When they arrived, they found a working fire with heavy smoke in the area. The fire was quickly knocked down and brought under control, according to Oquendo.
Firefighters are still operating at the scene as of 10:45 a.m.
“Sometimes in these scrap yards, people put things in there that there not supposed to at times,” Oquendo said. “They still have fuel in it, so that may ignite and then cause different types of metals to ignite. Certain metals are really stubborn to put out. So, with copious amounts of water, we were able to put the fire out.”
No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported, Oquendo said.
Hartford police are managing traffic while crews continue to work.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office.
