A small plane crashed into trees at an airport in Westerly, Rhode Island, on Monday, killing the pilot, according to a town official.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash at Westerly State Airport. Town Manager Sean Lacey told NBC affiliate WJAR that the pilot was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, and that the plane had appeared to be landing when it crashed.
Images from the scene showed the mangled plane in the tree line.
The FAA said the plane was a Cessna C172 that crashed about 12:05 p.m., with only the pilot on board. The agency didn’t have more information, referring further questions to the National Transportation Safety Board.
