Outages, trees down as strong storms move through Connecticut

Strong thunderstorms ripped through Connecticut on the Fourth of July, causing damage in multiple towns.

As of 9:30 p.m., nearly 77,000 Eversource customers were without power.

New Britain, as of 9 p.m., reported about 12,000 outages, according to Eversource.

The New Haven Fireworks display will be delayed until 9:45 p.m., according to Mayor Justin Elicker.

Trees are down on Interstate 84 westbound in Southington between Exits 33 and 32. The right and center lanes are closed.

Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department is asking residents to stay down as they deal with the storm damage. They said that multiple trees and wires are down throughout Huckleberry, Elbow, and Longmeadow Hill Road.

Gales Ferry Volunteer Fire Company said Route 12 is shut down from Ohio Avenue on the Groton side to Long Cove Road in Gales Ferry due to a tree and wires across the road.

Madison police said the following roads were closed Saturday evening due to storm damage:

Route 79 in the area of Dogwood Lane
Horse Pond Road / Dairy Hill Road
Horse Pond Road / Wickford Place
Race Hill Road
Colonial Road / Milo Drive
Colonial Road / Overbrook Road
Forest Road
Harkness Drive

Many NBC Connecticut viewers submitted photos and videos showing hail that struck places like Bristol and Burlington, and downed trees in Plainville and Farmington.

The Farmington Canal Condos saw trees downed

Claudia Branagan showed a large tree that was downed in Burlington around 7:45 p.m.
