One person has died, and two others were injured after a stabbing during a domestic incident at a Bridgeport home early Monday morning, police said.
Jahmar Whittingham, 44, fatally stabbed one of his family members and injured two other relatives, according to police.
Police said they were called to a home on the 960 block of Laurel Avenue around 5 a.m., and when they arrived, they found Whittingham standing outside holding a large kitchen knife.
“He dropped the knife when ordered but then told officers they would have to shoot him,” police said. “Whittingham refused to comply with further commands. Officers tased him, but he pulled the prongs from his body.”
Police then took Whittingham to the ground and placed him under arrest.
Officers discovered three stabbing victims who all lived at the home.
A 60-year-old man, Eric Johnson, was found in front of the home with a stab wound to the chest. An 85-year-old woman was found next to him with a stab wound to the abdomen. A 62-year-old man was also found in a driveway on the side of the house with multiple stab wounds to his back and side, police said.
All three victims were transported to Bridgeport Hospital.
Johnson was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said. The two surviving victims underwent surgery later Monday morning. Their conditions were not immediately available.
Police said Whittingham had recently lived in South Carolina, but had lived in Bridgeport before that. He had reportedly been staying at the Laurel Avenue home for several months, according to police.
Whittingham was charged with murder, assault in the first degree on an elderly person, assault in the first degree, and home invasion.
“Our hearts go out to the entire family. They are in our prayers,” Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter said. “The professionalism of our officers, in what was a very dangerous situation, prevented this from becoming a further tragedy.”
The investigation into this incident remains ongoing.
