The start of construction season in Connecticut is bringing overnight closures and detours to major highways in the Hartford area, including a key ramp connecting Interstate 84 and Interstate 91.
In Hartford, the eastbound Exit 51 flyover ramp from I-84 to I-91 North will close on weekday nights for the next two months. The closures begin Monday and will run from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Drivers who typically use that ramp will need to follow a detour. Traffic will be directed across the river to Exit 53, then onto local roads in East Hartford before rejoining I-84 westbound and taking Exit 51 to access I-91.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation said the closure is needed for a $5 million bridge rehabilitation project. Crews will repair the bridge deck, improve side walls and complete paving work.
“All of this work is to keep everyone safe while keeping everyone moving,” CTDOT spokesperson Eva Zymaris said.
The agency said the upgrades are designed to extend the life of the bridge and keep it in good condition.
“The benefits of this include increasing the surface life of the bridge, and also maintain the bridge in a state of good repair,” Zymaris said.
Officials emphasized the work is scheduled overnight on weekdays only to limit disruptions.
Meanwhile, in East Hartford, a separate project is also causing overnight closures. Eastbound Exit 56 to Governor Street and westbound Exit 55 to Route 2 are closed nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the next four weeks.
“Repairs are being made to that bridge because we know that that bridge has been struck several times by trucks,” Zymaris said.
Drivers are being urged to use caution in work zones.
“Slow down. Move over. Ditch the distractions. Be vigilant,” Zymaris said. “When you see that detour, please do your part to keep our workers safe.
