Newtown pauses use of ALPRs after considering resident feedback

Newtown pauses use of ALPRs after considering resident feedback

The Town of Newtown has announced that it is pausing its use of Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) after “careful consideration of resident feedback.”

Communities in Connecticut have been debating the use of ALPRs, with some municipalities ending their contracts while others continue to expand the technology’s use.

In early August, Gov. Ned Lamont called on the Connecticut Police Officers Standards and Training Council to review the increased use of Flock cameras or any other ALPRs across the state and asked municipalities to pause the installation of any new ALPRs as the state looks into guidance for their use.

Concerns about privacy, data collection, and Fourth Amendment protections are fueling opposition to the cameras throughout the state.

While use of ALPRs is paused, the Newtown Police Department will provide the Board of Police Commissioners with regular documentation verifying that they remain non-operational.

“Both the Board of Police Commissioners and the Newtown Police Department remain dedicated to working with our elected leadership to reach a consensus that reflects our community’s shared values,” Newtown Police Chief David Kullgren said.
