A New Haven man was arrested last Tuesday and is accused of abusing a puppy that led to her death, police said.
N’Quan Brown was charged with animal cruelty resulting in death after an incident in March of last year.
On March 25, 2025, a local veterinarian called police about Brown’s six-month-old puppy, whom the veterinarian suspected was a victim of abuse or neglect. Brown brought the puppy, Bella, to be seen after she could not stand up and was not eating or moving, according to police.
The 24-year-old said he was giving Bella a bath when the shower head fell and hit her in the head. He and his girlfriend then took the dog to the veterinarian after she was not acting normally, police said.
The trauma veterinarians said Bella was suffering from severe internal bleeding in her abdominal area and had a broken leg. After further examination, they also found she had a ruptured lung and broken ribs “from a previous timeframe that appeared to have healed,” according to police.
Brown agreed to have Bella turned over to the New Haven Police Department animal shelter, where she died later that day, police said.
Police were able to draft a warrant for Brown because Bella’s injuries were not consistent with what was reported to the veterinarian staff.
He turned himself in on Feb. 24 and was arrested. His bond is set at $25,000, and he will appear in court later this month.
