Mystic Aquarium returns young harbor seal to the ocean following rehabilitation

A young harbor seal is returning home after several weeks of rehabilitation at Mystic Aquarium.

Peanut the harbor seal was seen on the New Hampshire coast by the aquarium’s partner, Seacoast Science Center. Peanut was spotted on July 5, and the SSC team assessed that her health was poor, as she was thin, lethargic, and appeared to have signs of infection around her mouth.

Peanut was rescued that day and taken to the aquarium the following morning.

Mystic Aquarium said Peanut was placed on an individualized rehab plan while treating her injuries and a respiratory infection.

Over the weeks, she was fed through formula before graduating to fish and eventually eating on her own, the aquarium said.

Peanut gained more than 20 pounds, the aquarium said, and eventually reached a healthy enough condition to return to the ocean.

“Peanut’s recovery is a great example of what can happen when a stranded animal receives timely intervention and specialized rehabilitation care,” said Sarah Callan, Animal Rescue Program Manager, Mystic Aquarium. “Our team is thrilled to see her return to the ocean today, and we’re grateful to our partners at Seacoast Science Center for getting her the help she needed.”

Peanut was released off the coast of Rhode Island.
