Millions of eye drops recalled nationwide over sterility concerns

Millions of eye drops recalled nationwide over sterility concerns

Millions of bottles of over-the-counter eye drops used to treat redness, dryness and eye strain have been recalled due to concerns about their sterility, according to a Food and Drug Administration enforcement report.

The recall, initiated voluntarily by the Vietnam-based company Rohto-Mentholatum, affects 11,960,623 cartons of Rohto Cooling Eye Drops distributed nationwide.

According to the FDA, the affected products were recalled due to a “lack of assurance of sterility,” a manufacturing issue that could pose a risk because the product cannot be guaranteed free from potentially harmful microbes.

The FDA has designated it a Class II recall, meaning using the products may cause “temporary” or “reversible” health effects, but are not likely to result in serious consequences.

The recall affects select lots of eight Rohto Cooling Eye Drops varieties sold in single and twin-packs with expiration dates ranging from July 2026 to February 2029: ALL-IN-ONE, Max Strength, Max Strength Twin Pack, Optic Glow, Digi Eye, Dry Aid, Dry Aid Twin Pack and Cool Relief. (See a full list of affected lots below).

The drops were manufactured by Rohto-Mentholatum in Vietnam and distributed by The Mentholatum Company of Orchard Park, New York.

The FDA said customers should stop using the product immediately if their lot number is included in the recall. Customers can dispose of the drops or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

For questions about this recall, contact the FDA at 1-888-INFO-FDA (1-888-463-6332).
