A Middletown man was charged with murder after a shooting Wednesday evening, police said.
Officials said police received several 911 calls reporting multiple shots fired on Cooley Avenue just before 6 p.m. Callers also reported seeing a man running while holding a gun shortly after the shots were heard, according to police.
When officers got to the scene, they found one person who was shot multiple times. He was rushed to Middlesex Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He’s not been identified at this time.
According to officials, investigators quickly identified 24-year-old Nygell Smikle as the suspect. Smikle was later found in Hartford and taken into custody with assistance from detectives with the Hartford Police Department.
Smikle was charged with murder, carrying a handgun without a permit, first-degree reckless endangerment, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He was held on a $2 million bond and will appear at Middlesex Superior Court on Thursday.
Police said there’s no additional threat to the community and the investigation is ongoing.
If anyone has information related to the shooting, they’re asked to contact the Middletown Police Department’s Major Investigations Unit at 860-638-4140.
