A man was seriously injured after he crashed a car into a building that houses an East Haven restaurant early on Friday morning, police said.
East Haven police officers and firefighters were called to the area of Hot Roostah Restaurant on Foxon Road in East Haven at 5:24 a.m. for a motor vehicle accident, according to police.
When they arrived, they found a white SUV embedded into the side of the building with the driver still trapped inside, police said.
Firefighters used a Jaws of Life tool to remove the person from the car. The person sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for further evaluation.
Hot Roostah Restaurant is closed due to structural safety concerns, police said.
The driver had just finished an overnight shift and fell asleep behind the wheel, according to preliminary information from police.
“It appears that he lost control of his vehicle, struck a street sign and a telephone pole, which catapulted him into the unoccupied building,” police wrote in a press release.
Police said they do not believe the driver was intoxicated.
