Man charged with murder in Somers homicide due in court Wednesday
A man who is charged with murder in connection to a homicide in Somers on Tuesday morning is due in court on Wednesday.
Once there, state police said they were met outside by 33-year-old Joshua Freitag, of Somers, outside of the home. He was detained without incident.
The 9-1-1 caller said that Freitag forced entry into the house and shot the male victim in the second story bedroom. Life saving measures were attempted, but the victim was pronounced dead on the scene at 4:20 a.m.
Police have not released the names of anyone involved. However, loved ones identified the gunshot victim to NBC Connecticut as 34-year-old Mark Morgan of Enfield.
“It’s a heartbreak for a lot of people. A lot of people,” said Korie Prorok-Douglas, a friend of Morgan’s family.
Morgan’s loved ones said he left behind two young sons. They said he worked in commercial flooring and was proud of his job. They say he was known for his love of the beach, scary movies, and wrestling.
“He was a good role model for me,” said Jason Sharp, Morgan’s younger brother. “I promised to hold down both of my nephews and make sure the family unit is still strong and intact even though he’s not present.”
“A wonderful man and a wonderful father, who we are all very proud of,” Prorok-Douglas said.
Morgan’s family said they did not know much about the investigation, only that relationships were involved.
“But what we do know is that Mark didn’t deserve what happened to him,” Prorok-Douglas said.
The Department of Children and Families said it is investigating the incident in connection with Connecticut State Police.
“The situation is evolving and at this time, no further information is available to provide,” said Ken Mysogland, a spokesperson for DCF.
“Schools have been informed and are providing resources that may or may not be necessary,” said Somers First Selectman Tim Keeney.
Two children were in the Somers home at the time of the shooting and were not injured. It remains unclear how the parties knew each other, if at all. A motive has not been released.
Freitag was charged with murder, home invasion and two counts of risk of injury to a minor. He was held on a $1.5 million bond and is due in court on Wednesday.
“We’re standing by to provide any assistance they may need. This is an extraordinary incident, it’s unusual,” Keeney said.
Connecticut State Police said the investigation is active, fluid, and ongoing.
