Man accused of hitting 7 vehicles while fleeing from traffic stop in Middletown
A man hit several occupied vehicles and drove on the sidewalk while trying to flee from a traffic stop in Middletown on Monday, according to police.
Members of the Middletown Police Street Crime Unit conducted a motor vehicle stop on Main Street on Monday near its intersection with Court Street. Police said a 60-year-old man from Plainfield pulled his vehicle into a parking stall on Main Street.
As detectives approached the man’s vehicle on foot, investigators said he fled forward over the curb onto the Main Street sidewalk. In the process, authorities said he popped several tires and caused property damage to multiple structures on the sidewalk.
After that, the man allegedly drove north on the sidewalk before re-entering Main Street and then continued north and fled the area, police said.
According to investigators, one passenger in the vehicle feared for his life and jumped from the vehicle. A second passenger was not able to exit.
Shortly after, Cromwell Police found the man’s vehicle in their town. It was reportedly disabled after going though several residential yards. Authorities later determined that the man hit about seven occupied vehicles after he fled from Middletown, police added.
The man was arrested and faces charges including multiple motor vehicle violations, evading responsibility, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, unlawful restraint and two counts of kidnapping. He was held on bonds totaling $1,033,500 and appeared in court on Tuesday.
He was also found to have several outstanding warrants for his arrest for failure to appear in court for previous arrests, authorities said.
