Local small business broken into and vandalized in Enfield

Local small business owners are out thousands of dollars and years of memories after thieves broke in and stole merchandise and damaged property in Enfield.

David LaBerge and his wife recently closed their store, Second Floor Games,  at the Enfield Square Mall and are in the process of doing inventory and moving products to their new location, Twilight Cards & Games in South Windsor.

When they arrived Thursday to continue the work at the Enfield location, they discovered the store had been broken into and vandalized.

The thieves also posted a sign in the window of the business that stated, “Everything must go, FREE.”

La Berge says that they do not believe they will recover any of the stolen items, which were used to help fulfill card collection dreams.

“We don’ t expect to recover the stolen cards, which were predominantly my wife’s, the owner’s, personal stuff from childhood,” said LaBerge. “We would share (these) with the community to help fill old collections for kids and adults chasing their childhood collections. The best we can do is make the best of a crap sandwich.”

LaBerge says they estimate the loss to be at least $2,500. They are still going through the damage and need more time clean up the space to analyze any damaged goods and inventory any other stolen items.

“It’s half of rent, or payroll for a week,” said LaBerge. “It’s not business shattering but it does set us back. Our insurance is no longer on that space because of the closure of the mall, so we get nothing from any damages caused by this.”

LaBerge says they are not going to let this hinder them. They are hosting a card show tonight at their new South Windsor location. Admission is free for kids.

Enfield Police say they received a complaint this morning from the business owners and they are investigating.
