Youth detention center development plans in Tolland put on hold for now, says lawmakers

Judicial Branch ends bid to develop youth detention facility in Tolland

The Connecticut Judicial Branch has ended its bid to put a youth detention center in Tolland.

The plan drew criticism and anger in February when details were released. Many were concerned about the lack of communication with the town about the planned facility.

Others took issue with the location of the detention center being near schools and daycares.

The plans to develop the detention center were put on hold later in February.

On Thursday, the Chief Court Administrator announced the Judicial Branch will begin a search for a different location for the facility.

“The Judicial Branch has concluded that a REGIONS facility in Tolland would not serve the best interests of the juveniles in our care or advance the objectives of the program provided by the dedicated staff who work with them,” Justice Joan Alexander said in a statement.

The goal of the REGIONS program is to provide at-risk youth with tools to help them become productive adults in the community, she said.
