Judge sentences Hartford man who strangled the mother of his son 3 years ago

A judge at Rockville Court has sentenced Abdul Mboob to 34 years in prison after he took a plea deal and pleaded guilty. 

Mboob killed Anastasia Paul on July 17, 2023, in her Vernon apartment. At the time, they were living together and had a son. 

She was also pregnant at the time. 

Mboob’s arrest warrant states that he choked Paul to death because he was angry at her. 

Today in court, Mboob did not physically show up. Instead, he called in from Zoom. The courtroom quickly filled up with tears from Paul’s family.

“It’s been three long, exhausting years seeking justice for Anastasia with the hope of an outcome that is deserving for a criminal like this,” said the victim’s sister, Jelina Paul. “The outcome is permanent. She was denied every future she had planned.” 

Several family members made statements in court today, but Jeanine Lavoy, the victim’s mother, broke down in tears. 

“I can still hear her voice in my head calling out, ‘ Mom.’ She deserved to live,” said Lavoy. “…Why did you do this to my daughter? How can someone be that cruel and selfish and not care to just take a whole life and make a heart stop forever?”

In response, Mboob expressed remorse and apologized to Paul’s family. However, they walked out and did not listen to his statement. 

Even though the sentencing is over, Paul’s family will fight to raise awareness about domestic violence. In addition, they will make sure Paul’s memory stays alive for her four-year-old son. 

The judge has also set a standing protective order against Mboob. He is not allowed to contact the child until the little boy is at least 70 years old.
