Heida Competition Guidelines

Application Required Materials:

Curriculum Vitae/Resume – Providing education, coursework, research activities, performance experience, awards, and other relevant background (no promotional materials, please).

Bio (no more than 1,000 words)

Proof of Age – Upload a copy of your driver’s license, passport, or birth certificate.

Video Submission:

The total duration of your 3 pieces must not exceed 15 minutes. Recordings may be taken at different times; no edits allowed. Upload each piece separately. Separate movements are allowed.

Choose three pieces from solo piano repertoire that demonstrate your technical mastery, artistic expression, and facility in a broad range of genres. Each piece must be drawn from three of the following five eras, including Contemporary: 

  • Baroque (i.e., 1600-1750)
  • Classical (1750-1800) 
  • Romantic (1800-1900)
  • Modern (1900-1960) 
  • Contemporary (after 1960) *required*

GENERAL INFORMATION:

The Heida Competition is open to all pianists born after June 30, 1994 and before June 30, 2007.

Applications are due on June 30. The application fee is $162.

Taxes will be deducted from prizes.

Final Round

The final round will take place on November 15, 2025, at MoCA CT (19 Newtown Turnpike, Westport, CT 06880). Three applicants will be chosen by the jury to compete in the final round. Finalists will be required to perform a program of 45 minutes maximum, including speaking and playing. The finalists must include the newly commissioned work which they will receive in early September. Each piece must be drawn from three of the following five eras: 

  • Baroque (i.e., 1600-1750)
  • Classical (1750-1800) 
  • Romantic (1800-1900)
  • Modern (1900-1960) 
  • Contemporary (after 1960) *required*

The finalists’ travel will be reimbursed, they will stay with a local host family and be provided with a piano to practice on.
