The Hall High School community gathered at the school’s running track to remember Camden Siegal, whose death in February sent shockwaves throughout the community.
For Evan Levy, the event was personal. Siegal was his cousin.
“They’re actually planning on running 23 times in honor of him, which is six miles,” Levy said. “23 means a lot to them, because that was his favorite number.”
The memorial run comes just days before Hall High School’s graduation ceremony, a milestone Siegal would have celebrated with his classmates had his life not been tragically cut short in February.
“Graduations coming up next Thursday, and he would have been a graduating senior with his friends,” Levy said. “But, you know, it’s still a way to honor him.”
While waiting outside a bar on Ann Uccello Street in Hartford for an Uber, Siegal was caught in the crossfire of a double shooting.
An innocent bystander, the high school senior was struck by gunfire and later died at the hospital.
He was just months away from receiving his diploma and continuing his journey.
That journey is now being carried on by those who knew him.
Or, as Levy says, those who know him.
“He’s about school, he’s about sports, but he’s about friendship and community,” Levy said. “And that’s really what Camden is about. He’s still we don’t talk about it in the past tense. It’s still what Camden is about today.”
Organizers said the memorial run is just one of the ways the community plans to honor and remember Siegal in the years ahead.
If you weren’t able to attend the run in person, organizers are urging people to consider donating directly to the Camden Siegal Memorial Fund, here.
