A former employee at an Avon daycare is facing new sexual assault charges involving children at the facility.
Police began the investigation at the BrightPath Avon Early Learning and Child Care Center after an administrator contacted them about an employee possibly having inappropriate contact with a child.
Jan Carlos Berrios-Otero, 29, was originally arrested on April 1 and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor involving one child.
According to police, their investigation discovered six additional incidents involving five children.
Berrios-Otero is now facing multiple additional charges of fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor related to those incidents, police said. He is also charged with aggravated sexual assault of a minor due to the number of victims under the age of 13, they said.
“The issuance of this warrant reflects the continued, methodical work of investigators. But it also underscores a broader failure by BrightPath to protect the children in its care” Sarah Klein and Eric Schoenberg, attorneys representing one of the alleged victims said in a statement.
BrightPath announced on Wednesday that it will close the Avon loctation by the end of May.
