A fire has damaged multiple businesses in Branford.
Firefighters were called to the 200 block of East Main Street around 12:45 a.m. for a report of wires down.
When crews arrived, they said they found primary electrical wires down and actively arcing in the road. They said they also saw smoke and fire coming from the side of the building into the attic.
Investigators said the building houses several businesses including a barbershop, a day spa business, a vacant commercial space and a residential area. All occupants were reportedly able to get out of the building.
Firefighters extinguished the attic fire and protected the adjoining barbershop and residential occupancies from significant damage.
Authorities said the day spa business and the vacant commercial space sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage and will remain closed pending repairs. The barber shop and residential occupancy remain occupied.
According to fire officials, witnesses reported seeing a vehicle drive over the downed electrical wires and continued dragging them down the road before leaving the scene.
Firefighters remind the public not to drive over or near downed utility wires. All downed wires should be treated as energized and 911 should be notified immediately.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
