Fairfield Police make arrests in gold scam cases targeting elderly

Fairfield Police make arrests in gold scam cases targeting elderly

Fairfield police say two separate investigations into financial scams targeting elderly residents have led to arrests, with victims collectively losing more than $457,000.

According to the Fairfield Police Department, both instances involved victims being persuaded to withdraw large sums of money and convert their assets into gold, which was then handed over to individuals posing as couriers.

In both cases, separate individuals from New York were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit larceny in the first degree and conspiracy to commit telephone fraud in the first degree.

The first incident was in June 2025.  A Fairfield resident was instructed to withdraw funds and purchase gold that was later collected by a courier. The victim in that case suffered an approximate loss of $166,000.

The second was in September 2025. Another Fairfield resident was convinced to convert assets into gold and provide it to individuals posing as couriers. That victim suffered an approximate loss of $291,070, which included a wire transfer and the purchase of gold.

While the scams used similar tactics, police said the cases involved different victims and different suspects.

Fairfield police say the investigations required extensive work, including surveillance review, financial tracing across multiple banking institutions, and search warrants for telecommunications and digital records. Detectives also worked with regional and federal partners to identify those responsible.

Police are warning residents that scams involving impersonation of government agencies, financial institutions, or law enforcement are increasingly targeting older adults. These scams often include demands to withdraw money, purchase gold, or hand over assets to a courier.

Authorities stress that no legitimate agency will ever ask someone to move money or buy gold to secure their accounts.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a similar scam is encouraged to contact the Fairfield Police Department. Anyone with information related to similar incidents can contact the Fairfield Police Detective Bureau at (203) 254-4840.
