Drivers are urging caution on the roads after a motorcycle crash on Interstate 84 in Waterbury Sunday caused serious injuries and brought traffic to a standstill for hours.

State police said the crash involved a motorcycle and resulted in serious injuries. The incident snarled traffic along I-84 and prompted conversations among drivers about motorcycle safety on Connecticut highways.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation says the state averages about 50 motorcycle deaths each year. According to CTDOT, motorcycle fatalities account for about 19% of all traffic deaths in Connecticut annually, a rate higher than the national average.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that in 2024, motorcycle deaths made up 16% of all traffic fatalities nationwide.

Some drivers said motorcycles can be difficult to anticipate when traveling on busy highways.

“I’m looking into my rear-view mirror, and I can seem coming up behind me and I’m like ‘Oh Lord’,” said Minnie Ings of Waterbury.

Ings said motorcycles sometimes pass drivers at high speeds.

“I’m driving. I’m concentrating on where I’m going and something just loud come by me so fast, it’s aggravating,” said Ings.

Drivers also emphasized the importance of patience and caution behind the wheel.

“Take it easy. You’re going to get there somehow, some way. Just take it easy, take your time,” said Wilmarie Ramirez of Waterbury.

CTDOT recommends that motorcyclists wear helmets, obey speed limits and ride defensively.

Drivers said roadway safety depends on everyone sharing responsibility.

“Pay attention and think about the next person. It’s not all about you,” said Ings.
