As Iran and Israel continue to trade military strikes, protestors in New Haven demanded no war with Iran and an end to U.S. involvement.
“Not another nickel…not another dime!”
There was an air of frustration and anger in New Haven on Sunday as dozens of protestors gathered demanding no war with Iran.
“We’re going to fall into another forever war,” James Adam of Waterbury said.
Protestors say they’re worried after the U.S. strikes that killed the Iranian supreme leader, the country would be dragged into a long conflict that could destabilize the middle east and result in many Iranian and American deaths. They say the money spent on military strikes could be better used on other things and serve as a distraction from helping people at home.
“Our tax dollars should be going to health care rather than killing people, so this is out of responsibility. Responsibility for, of course, the people around the world, but also responsibility for folks living in New Haven, Connecticut,” Phill Campbell, the protest organizer, said.
The strikes drew mixed reactions from Connecticut leaders. The state Republican Party applauding the military strikes saying the president “demonstrated the clarity and strength that the world so desperately needs.” Meanwhile Senator Richard Blumenthal criticized President Trump for going around Congress to take military action. He said Senate Democrats and a few Republicans want to push through on a war powers resolution to limit the president’s actions on Iran.
“War should always be a last resort, not a first choice. This war is a choice made by President Trump, risking in fact a forever war,” Blumenthal said.
