Have you received a text from the DMV falsely claiming you have an unpaid traffic citation recently? The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles says it’s a scam.
The circulating message states that an “‘unresolved traffic citation’ will result in vehicle registration suspension, additional fees, and possible court action if payment is not made by a specific deadline,” the DMV said.
The message then tells recipients to click a payment link.
“This message is not legitimate and was not sent by the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles,” the DMV said. “The DMV does not send payment demands through text message.”
The East Haven Police Department also warned of the scams in a Facebook post.
“These messages are designed to create panic and pressure people into acting quickly. If you receive one, do not click any links, do not send money, and do not provide any personal or financial information,” police said in the post.
The DMV says that if you get one of these messages, you should not click the link or reply. You should also delete the text and report it to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
