College Hoops Roundup: Trinity men’s basketball back in Big Dance
Trinity 80, Wesleyan 55
Trinity men’s basketball will be back in the NCAA Tournament, with a chance to defend its national title.
The Bantams lit up Wesleyan in the second half of the NESCAC championship game on Sunday, outscoring the Cardinals, 50-24, to roll to an 80-55 win in Middletown.
The victory gives Trinity (25-2) its third straight NESCAC title. Senior forward Jarrell Okorougo led the way with 20 points. Junior guard Jared Berry added 19. Zach Wolinski scored 21 for Wesleyan, which led at halftime, 31-30.
The Cardinals (21-6) finished 9-1 in the NESCAC, and beat Trinity 64-62, in their regular season meeting. They’ll look for an at-large bid in the Division III tournament. The bracket will be announced Monday at 1 p.m.
Quinnipiac 67, Canisius 63
Asim Jones’ 27 points helped Quinnipiac defeat Canisius 67-63 in a regular-season finale on Sunday.
Jones shot 10 of 22 from the field, including 4 for 9 from 3-point range, and went 3 for 5 from the line for the Bobcats (19-12, 12-8 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Keith Mcknight scored 22 points while shooting 9 for 16 (1 for 3 from 3-point range) and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line, and added nine rebounds. Grant Randall had four points and shot 0 of 5 from the field, including 0 for 3 from 3-point range, and went 4 for 4 from the line.
Bryan Ndjonga finished with 17 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Griffins (10-21, 5-15). Canisius also got 14 points from Kahlil Singleton. Michael Evbagharu also had 10 points, 14 rebounds and five assists.
The MAAC Tournament runs Thursday through March 10 at Atlantic City, New Jersey. Quinnipiac finished fifth in the regular season and Canisius finished tied for 11th place.
Mount St. Mary’s 69, Fairfield 47
Trey Deveaux scored 19 points as Mount St. Mary’s beat Fairfield 69-47 on Sunday.
Deveaux shot 6 of 8 from the field and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line for the Mountaineers (15-16, 11-9 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Arlandus Keyes went 6 of 14 from the field (3 for 10 from 3-point range) to add 15 points. Luke McEldon finished 4 of 6 from the floor to finish with eight points.
Braden Sparks finished with 15 points for the Stags (19-12, 11-9). Declan Wucherpfennig added nine points and 14 rebounds for Fairfield. Tony Williams finished with eight points.
