Beloved potato chips sold at restaurants, grocery stores recalled for potential salmonella

Beloved potato chips sold at restaurants, grocery stores recalled for potential salmonella

A recall has been issued for two popular brands of potato chips, with a number of flavors impacted because some of their ingredients may be contaminated with salmonella.

The voluntary recall, issued May 4 by Utz Quality Foods, affects a handful of Zapp’s and Dirty brand chips, according to a news release from the Food and Drug Administration. According to the FDA, the recall was initiated after it was discovered that the chips’ seasoning, which contains dry milk powder, may contain salmonella.

The recall was made “out of an abundance of caution,” the FDA said, as affected seasoning batches tested negative. However, the contaminated dry milk powder supplied by a third party had already led to a number of other recalls, including frozen pizzas and pork rinds.

“To date, there have been no complaints of illness reported to Utz in connection with the recalled products,” the release said. “Utz is recalling these products based on the ingredient supplier’s recall.”

According to the FDA, the following products were recalled:

  • 1.5 ounce Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips; UPC 83791272917
  • 2.5 ounce Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips; UPC 83791272924
  • 8 ounce Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips; UPC 83791272931
  • 2 ounce Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips; UPC 83791520148
  • 1.5 ounce Zapp’s Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips; UPC 83791010144
  • 2 ounce Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chips; UPC 83791520162
  • 2.5 ounce Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chips; UPC 83791192208
  • 8 ounce Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chips; UPC 83791192246
  • 2 ounce Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips; UPC 83791520094

Consumer are advised to throw the products away and not eat them. Retailers should check their inventory and shelves to confirm that none of the chips are available for purchase.
