Around 80 residents displaced, 3 taken to the hospital after fire rips through Danbury apartment building
About 80 residents have been displaced after a two-alarm fire ripped through a Danbury apartment complex, officials said.
Danbury first responders were called around 4:15 p.m. Thursday on the report of a fire. Officials said there was conflicting information regarding the exact address, but when firefighters arrived at the scene, they found a heavy fire. Crews escalated the response to a second alarm.
Officials said that during the firefighting effort, crews learned of a resident reported to be trapped on his balcony while heavy smoke filled his apartment. Firefighters were able to rescue him, and he was taken to Danbury Hospital after he was evaluated at the scene.
According to officials, about 60 firefighters across multiple departments, including Danbury, Brookfield, and Stony Hill, tackled the blaze until it was brought under control about two hours later. During the response, there was a “three-floor pancake collapse” of the structure, officials said.
Three civilians were taken to the hospital along with one firefighter for evaluation. A dog was also rescued and taken to a veterinary hospital in Newtown for treatment, officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
