An arrest affidavit is providing new details about an alleged sexual assault of a child at an Avon daycare last month.
It involved a 4-year-old boy at the BrightPath Avon Early Learning and Child Care Center on Simsbury Road.
According to the arrest affidavit, Jan Carlos Berrios-Otero, a worker at the daycare, was seen on video lying next to the boy during nap time and reaching under a blanket that was covering the child. The blanket was also covering Berrios-Otero’s lower half.
He also held his cell phone under the blanket, according to the affidavit.
The entire incident went on for 47 minutes, police said.
The child told his parents that Berrios-Otero, who the children called “Mr. John,” had touched his genitals. When the parents examined their son, they said his genitals were red, swollen, and had a scab, according to the arrest affidavit.
The parents reported the incident to administrators at BrightPath, who in turn notified police.
Berrios-Otero was arrested on April 1 and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child. He no longer works at the facility.
The child’s parents have since filed a lawsuit against BrightPath’s parent company, Busy Bees, Ltd.
Police are looking at the possibility that there are other victims.
