FBI sends New Britain subpoena as part of Erin Stewart investigation

FBI sends New Britain subpoena as part of Erin Stewart investigation

The FBI has submitted a subpoena to the city of New Britain as part of its investigation into former mayor Erin Stewart, sources told NBC Connecticut.

NBC Connecticut has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for the subpoena, but has not received the document as of Wednesday afternoon.

The FBI is one of several agencies looking into how Stewart handled city money while she was mayor.

The agency is conducting one of several investigations into how Stewart handled city money during her 12 years as mayor.

Current Mayor Bobby Sanchez (D-New Britain) hired the Crumbie Law Group to review the city’s finances.

That review has now produced three reports raising questions about how Stewart and other city employees handled money during her tenure.

That includes a May report accusing Stewart of using a city credit card for personal purchases.

The report led Stewart to halt her campaign for governor just ahead of the Republican convention. She was the presumed favorite for the party’s endorsement.

Crumbie investigators then released another report last week documenting her attempts to obtain additional compensation, including a severance package of roughly $150,000.

The report said that it was 10 times what she was entitled to. The report also said she ignored the city’s process for securing tuition reimbursement and requested a pension she was not eligible for.

Sanchez sent Stewart a letter Tuesday seeking $240,000 in restitution for some of those benefits. That request also includes some of the costs of the city’s investigation.
