Power restored following outage that affected over 40,000 customers
Power has been restored for over 40,000 Eversource customers after an American flag that flew into a transmission line in Stamford caused major outages, according to Eversource.
The flag flew into the transmission line during the storms Saturday night, creating an initial impact on 5,000 customers. About 3,000 customers had their power restored within 20 minutes through remote power switching. The remaining impacted customers had their power restored by 5 a.m. on Sunday, according to a spokesperson for Eversource.
Crews were preparing to remove the flag Sunday afternoon when a gust of wind shifted it, causing a second power outage that affected about 40,000 people, according to Eversource.
The Greenwich Office of Emergency Management said that the “unexpected failure” resulted in a “widespread outage that at one point affected 99% of Greenwich.”
The flag has since been removed, according to Eversource.
There were approximately 183 remaining affected customers in Greenwich by 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, according to the Greenwich Office of Emergency Management.
The Stamford Police Department posted on Facebook at 6:30 p.m. that power outages in the town had been resolved.
According to Eversource’s outage map, there are seven outages in Stamford and fewer than five outages in Greenwich as of 10:50 a.m. on Monday.
