New Britain drainage project receives full funding to address chronic flooding

Relief may finally be on the way for New Britain homeowners who have dealt with repeated flooding as a long-awaited drainage project secured full funding.

Residents near Allen Street have spent years dealing with flooded basements and streets during heavy rainstorms due to an aging stormwater system that struggles to handle large volumes of water.

“We’re surrounded by water here. We’re at the bottom of the low-lying area here, so everything floods to us,” New Britain resident Frank Chase said.

City officials announced that a drainage improvement project in New Britain will move forward after receiving an additional $5 million in state bond funding. The money will be added to the $8 million already secured through state and federal infrastructure programs.

The project includes upgrades to the stormwater system, replacement of sewer and water lines, and plans to divert rainwater to a nearby creek.

Residents explained that previous flooding has caused major problems for homeowners in the area.

“Our pumps are going night and day to get it out of there and to help preserve our home,” Chase said.

Neighbors near Roxbury Road said a retention pond frequently overflows during major rainstorms. Some residents have nicknamed the area “Lake Roxbury” because of the recurring flooding.

“I’m glad they could get that situated. Kind of helps us out over here,” New Britain resident Aidan Budge said.

After years of raising concerns at city meetings, Chase said residents are finally optimistic about the future.

“A sigh of relief. A deep breath and good things are happening,” Chase said.

Chase said he has been in contact with the city and expects construction to begin in late winter or early spring next year.

“We’re hoping that’ll handle the amount of water and that should take care of it,” Chase said.

While residents may still face flooding in the meantime, Chase said the funding announcement represents a major step forward for the neighborhood.

“I’m fighting for my home, and all my neighbors are too, and it was a big deal. Today was a big deal,” Chase said.
