A man was shot in the head in Waterbury in the early hours of Wednesday morning, police said.
Waterbury police were dispatched to the 100 block of Easton Avenue for a report of shots fired at 3:14 a.m. on Wednesday, according to police.
When they arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The shooting happened near Reed Elementary School, and kids were seen walking past Wednesday as officers were investigating.
“It was only one gunshot I heard; it woke me up,” said Luis Gonzalez, who lives feet away from the location of the shooting. “Nobody wants something like this to happen on their street, especially close to the school; that’s not even right.”
NBC Connecticut reached out to Waterbury Public Schools and said the investigation was not impacting school operations.
“I feel bad for the kids who had to walk by that to actually go over there,” said Gonzalez. “I don’t want to see [the scene], so I can imagine kids catching a glimpse of it would be terrible.”
“I see the new Reed School and the P.A.L trying to make a change, trying to get kids off the street. But we still need more help; we still need more help,” said resident Jeffery Mitchel.
The identity of the victim and the possible shooter are not clear as of Wednesday afternoon.
NBC Connecticut saw investigators taking photos inside of a Blue Hyundai that appeared to be parked on the street.
Investigators were also seen looking through grass, trash cans, and kicking around front lawns. It’s not clear what they were searching for, or if they found what they needed.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Waterbury Police Detective Bureau at 203-574-6941 or provide an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 203-755-1234.
